Sørg for å holde hunden din hydrert i sommervarmen!

Make sure to keep your dog hydrated in the summer heat!

Throughout the country we can see temperatures approaching 30 degrees this week. Dogs tolerate heat less well because they eliminate fluids in a different way than we humans do. On hot summer days you can become dehydrated if you don't drink enough fluids.

You can read about the causes, signs, and methods to avoid dehydration below.

  • Causes and signs of dehydration.
Your dog can become dehydrated for various reasons such as vomiting and diarrhea, or playing and long days outdoors on a hot summer day without access to sufficient water or shade.

Signs of dehydration can include dullness and loss of elasticity in the skin. You can easily check this by doing a small pinch test to see if the skin "springs back" into place or stays pinched for several seconds. You can also easily try this test on yourself beforehand, to see how it works.

Another sign may be an abnormal amount of breathing and panting, while also being drawn towards shade, cool surfaces and perhaps water.

Another test you can do is to press on your dog's gums until they turn white. If the blood flows back quickly, that's a good sign. However, if it takes three or more seconds, that's a sign that your dog is very dehydrated.

  • Make sure your dog stays hydrated with these tips:
If you are already a dog owner, you know how quickly the water bowl empties during the summer months! A good option is to place water bowls in several zones in the home, especially if you are at work or for other reasons not at home and can check or refill the water bowl when it is empty.

Another popular option is to use a water dispenser/fountain that provides your dog with continuous access to water. Some models, such as this one , are equipped with a carbon filter that recycles the water and ensures optimal water quality all day long!

At the same time, remember that growing puppies need more fluids than adult dogs.

  • Hydration on the go
If you have an active lifestyle, travel a lot and spend long days outdoors, these portable water and food bowls can be a good option as they are lightweight, take up little space and make it easy to serve food and drinks on the go.

If you're going to the beach or a trip to the park, these water toys can be placed in the refrigerator and packed in a cooler bag, to have a cooling effect on hot summer days!

In addition to keeping your dog hydrated, make sure to bring nutritious dog food with you. We love this natural dog food from Nala Health, which is hypoallergenic and rich in insect proteins, vegetables, fruits, and essential oils and plant extracts.

This dog food contains no synthetic vitamins and minerals, fillers, soy, wheat, flavorings, preservatives or colorings.

Along with adequate fluids, this will help keep your dog healthy, energetic and happy on a hot summer day!

  • What are the signs of severe dehydration?
If your dog is suffering from a case of severe dehydration, you may see bright red gums, a rapid heart rate, and a weak pulse. The dog may also show signs of mild to severe tremors and, in the most severe cases, fainting.

If you suspect your dog has heatstroke or is suffering from severe dehydration, this should always be considered an emergency and a veterinarian should be contacted. A veterinarian will be able to quickly determine whether it is necessary to come in or assist you with treatment at home.

If there is severe dehydration, be careful not to give too much water as it can lead to vomiting and worsening the situation. Therefore, always start by giving small amounts.

Dogs are very intuitive animals and often don't drink more than necessary. So make sure your dog never gets dehydrated by providing them with access to clean, fresh water every day!
